The Tompkins-McCollom Study Room was built 2004 and was the second room to be endowed from that round of construction. Like many donors, a love of libraries inspired OSU alumna, Katherine McCollom to endow a study room at the OSU Library. “A library has always been a special place for me,” McCollom said. “Everywhere I’ve been, I have always enjoyed a library.” McCollom chose to honor both her parents and her husband with the naming of the room. “The Tompkins is for my mother and father; the McCollom is my husband,” she said.

OSU alumni Joe and Jeanne Craig (Class of ’58 and Class of ’59 respectively) provided a generous gift for the library study room that bears their names. The Craig family has a long OSU history. After graduating, Joe served our nation for 26 years in the U.S. Army, retiring as a Colonel. Jeanne used her degrees to serve society as a Licensed Marriage and Family Counselor. The Craigs’ library study room gift is one of many ways that they have invested in the lives of others.

Long-time Library supporters, Dean and Carol Stringer were the first donors to endow one of the group study rooms built in 2004. Dean Stringer, then-President of the Friends of the OSU Library, said “Carol and I are pleased to make this gift. The study rooms improve the OSU Library and should be of particular benefit to students. What a perfect cause!” The Stringers hoped their gift would inspire other donors to support similar student-focused projects at the Library.

Named after OSU alumnus Roy Holleman, this room is one of many demonstrations of this foundation’s strong support of libraries and the academic discipline of library science. The Roy & Marian Holleman Foundation has also established a generous scholarship endowment for students who work in the OSU Libraries in Stillwater.

On March 8, 2022, Library employees, donors and supporters gathered to unveil the latest named group study room in the Edmon Low Library. The room’s name had been kept a secret until the formal announcement. The gift to endow the room was made by OSU alum, Baloo Subramaniam, as a surprise honoring his wife. Maribeth Subramaniam has served on the Friends of the OSU Library Board of Directors since 2011. She learned of the gift at the public announcement. “My husband is very good at surprises; I had no idea,” Maribeth said.

In 2008, Thomas and Cheryl Hamilton dedicated a study room in memory of Thomas’s father, Joe J. Hamilton (Class of 1941) to honor his contributions to OAMC and the Edmon Low Library. Joe received a bachelor’s degree in architecture and later became the architectural engineer for the OAMC Library and Student Union. The Hamilton family recognized that sponsoring a study room impacts many students and provides a lasting impression on the Library. To help students feel at home in their study room, the Hamiltons hung a display case handcrafted by Thomas Hamilton. The case is filled with family mementos and personal belongings.

In 2015, Cheryl and Thomas Hamilton dedicated a study room in memory of Cheryl’s parents Weslie and Laveta Hendren. “I wanted to pay it forward for what my parents have done for me,” Cheryl Hamilton said. Weslie Hendren graduated from OAMC in 1948 with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. The Hamiltons’ believe there is no better place to give to than the Library because it is “literally and figuratively the heart of the university.”

Dedicated in October 1994 as the H. Louise Cobb Room, this space is a permanent tribute to a founding member of the Executive Board of the Friends of the OSU Library. H. Louise (Boyer) Cobb graduated from OAMC in 1949 with a bachelor’s degree in home economics. She was a charter member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority and in 1948 served as its chapter president. Mrs. Cobb, who died in 1992, was the wife of Ed Cobb, chief executive officer of Toklan Oil and Gas Company of Tulsa. Mr. Cobb and their three children donated funds to remodel the room. Upon Mr. Cobb’s death, the room was renamed to honor both.

In 1897, Jessie Thatcher became the first woman to graduate from OAMC. She received a bachelor’s degree with the second graduating class. She went on to teach in Stillwater schools until her marriage to Henry A. Bost in 1902. She continued to teach school and, until her death in 1963, was active in community affairs as well as in those of her alma mater. The Jessie Thatcher Bost Room was established by her son, Armon H. Bost, in 1991.
